Volet Végétal” is a design for an urban planting system that allows apartment dwellers to grow veggies and herbs, even if they don’t have much space. The system neatly fits within a window frame and holds three planter trays in a pivoting holder. A simple set of tension bars, strings and pulleys allows the user to lower the frame from vertical to horizontal to gain more sun. The system can remain locked in a vertical position during inclement weather.
Barreau&Charbonnet, which is run by Nicolas Barreau and Jules Charbonnet based in Paris and Nantes respectively, came up with the design as a way to find a connection between plants and people even within a dense urban city. They presented “Volet Végétal” this year at the Jardin des Tuileries as a finalist in the Jardins Jardin design contest. Although the system isn’t for sale now, the duo are refining the project and working on developing the project further for production. They hope that the final design can also be used indoors as a standing planter.
