Tooth Brushing Hippos at Shangai Zoo


Thezoo keepers brush the hippo teeth, makes sure his pearly whites are gleaming.The enormous hippos at Shanghai Zoo always have thrice – weekly brushing sessions by keepers. Diligent zoo keepers have manufactured a special brush designed to reach right to the back of the beasts’ enormous mouths – without the keepers having to lean too far in.Previously, the zoo’s hippos had their teeth scrubbed with a broom.

Zoo keeper Pan Xiuwen, said: ‘Wild hippos don’t need to have their teeth cleaned, because they usually eat grass, which doesn’t get stuck in their teeth. ‘But here, we feed them fruit and vegetables which can easily clog up the gaps in-between their teeth.’
