Next time you go for a drive, think about how much time and brainpower you waste trying not to run into objects and people. Now imagine how much more awesome your life would be if you had a car that was so soft and squishy that no matter how drunk* and/or reckless you are, it just doesn’t matter.
The Humanix iSAVE-SC1 may be little more than an electric golf cart with three wheels and a top speed of about 30 mph, but what it lacks in style, performance, and features it more than makes up for with safety. This thing is crazy safe. In fact, it’s so safe that the safety of the people actually driving the car appears to be a secondary concern: in what could be an automotive industry first, you may be better off getting hit by the iSAVE-SC1 than you would be driving it.
Instead of having a “body” made of plastic or metal, the iSAVE-SC1 is surrounded with giant inflatable balloons made of tent fabric. When you hit something or someone, these balloons cushion the blow, and with the aforementioned lousy top speed, it seems highly unlikely that you’d ever cause any damage or injury whatsoever with this vehicle. And wouldn’t that be liberating? Parallel parking would be a breeze; just smash into the cars in front and behind until you get it right. Stuck in stop and go traffic? Feel free to zone out and forget about the brakes, you’ll just bounce right off the guy in front of you. Pedestrian crossing illegally? Gun it, and teach them that next time, getting hit by a car probably won’t be fun.
The iSAVE-SC1 is going on sale next month in Japan for a mere $10,000, and Humanix says that mass production (including a U.S. introduction) could happen as soon as next year.
