Chinese artist Ai
Weiwei has created a giant installation consisting of 760 bicycles for his
first solo show at Gallery
Continua’s San Gimignano gallery space. The walk-around installation sits
on the main stage of the gallery as a continuation of the artist’s 2008 piece.
In both works Weiwei explores mass manufacturing through his country’s
principal means of transportation.
Every bike is produced by Yong Jui pai, China’s most common bicycle brand.
The bike’s components and the arrangement of the final product serves as a
metaphor for the unnavigable web of the Chinese labor force.
