The 'Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental' by global practice Atkins is currently under construction within a water-filled quarry
near Shanghai in Songjiang, China to rejuvenate the currently depleted man-made landscape. The 17-storey structure stands 2 floors
above the ground while the majority of the combined resort and business hotel is set into the 80 meter deep void, along a rockface.
The elevated entrance begins as a glass encased river which then cascades over the cliff edge into a metaphorical waterfall,
containing the building's vertical circulation paths. branching from the elevator core, guests may access two wings leading to rooms.
the thermal mass of the stone will serve to stabilize the temperature of the internal environment, reducing energy requirements.
The curved facade of balconies offer panoramic views of the scenery while two submerged floors of sleeping quarters enjoy
a personal submarine experience. within the base of the building at water level, communal facilities including a Swimming pool,
Recreational area, Conference centers and Banquet halls accommodate up to 1,000 individuals. additional activities including
Rock climbing and Bungee jumping will be cantilevered over the lake.
