The wildebeest fell into the Masai River during an annual migration across the Masai Mara in Kenya. Snapper Mitchell Krog, 39, said: "The hippo sensed the wildebeest was injured and had no chance of survival.
"It's not often an animal like a hippo shows a softer, more humane side."
But amazingly the bull hippo takes pity on the struggling creature. Fixing its massive jaws around him it lifts him free, saving him from a slow and painful death.
